About

jonzHello, world! My name is Jon Zmikly. It’s a pleasure to make your digital acquaintance.

I grew up in the great state of Michigan where I earned a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast and Cinematic Arts from Central Michigan University. After a series of internships and jobs at television and radio stations around Michigan, I traveled to Texas to pursue a master’s degree at Texas State University in 2007. After taking just a few digital media grad courses and attending SXSW Interactive, I began to see how much the internet was completely disrupting the traditional media industry, which I saw as a major opportunity for new forms of storytelling an innovation in media. I began experimenting with websites, digital video and social media as tools for digital communication and continue to do so today.

Since my time in grad school, it’s been exciting to see how much the media and communication has changed, and I feel pretty lucky to be part of the digital revolution.

I am currently a professor of instruction in the School of Journalism & Mass Communication (SJMC) at Texas State University where I teach in the Digital Media Innovation sequence. Most of my courses focus on the convergence of new technology and media, including web design and a survey course on the fundamentals of online media. I’m also a content manager and editor for the SJMC website, blog and social media accounts. I am also the Assistant Director of our Media Innovation Lab, where lead our VR/AR/MR efforts, organize events / collaborate with other university organizations, and work with faculty, staff and students for more digital training and resources.

When I’m not mass-communicating it up, I’m the youth pastor and webmaster for San Marcos Community Church, and I am the co-founder of a digital full-service agency in Austin called coiski.

While my life seems to change every couple years or so, one thing that never changes is my full devotion to Jesus Christ. I love talking about what He has done in my life, and I know He has an ultimate plan for each one of us. I’m very excited to see “the plans He has made for me.” Feel free to check out my resume and CV below.
