The World is Flat (Steffanie, Marcos and Massiel)

Our final project will be on how the internet has influenced and changed so much in our world. We got the idea from a book called “The World is Flat.”  In this book the author wrote about many events that contributed to evening out the playing field around the world. It mentioned how the person sitting next to you, or the person in a different city is no longer your only competition. Your competition could easily be someone in India. Our group decided to write on how technology has created bigger competition for businesses, gamers, and dating, and how it has changed the way we do so many things.

Our first page, the home page, will give information about the concept and briefly introduce each page. Our second page will cover the business aspect and how it has changed. The third page will be over gaming and how much it has changed since Pac-Man and the first game systems. Our fourth page will be over social media and how much easier it has become to find and connect with people, and our final page will be over online dating. The online dating page which will cover how the internet has changed dating.

We will interview gamers and people who use online dating sites to incorporate video.

Final Project – Drug Addiction

Jolina and I will be make our final website on drug addiction. We will incorporate facts about drug use with interviews on people who have actually struggled with drugs (possibly people who have recovered and not). I also took a Sociology class called Drugs and Society, so I will reach out to that professor to possibly get an interview with her to get her view on drug addiction.

Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

Everyone in college has a story, and one of the most asked questions to fellow students is, “What’s your major?” The second most asked question, “Why did you choose that?” and usually the third question is, “What are you going to do with that?”
Whether you’re an engineer, a journalist, pre-med, an artist or even an aspiring traveller, there’s always an interesting story that goes behind the ideas for our life plan after college.

Baylor Campus Students

Students enjoy a concert in the quad.

Pages will include:
(Homepage)
-About
-Featured
-Anonymous (forum)
-Media (videos, photos)
-Contact

Media:

A slideshow will appear on the banner of the website – images in the slideshow will be added from the images used in each of the stories. A video on the homepage or about will be a self-made video montage of the team, examples of interviews and shots of campus (explaining the purpose of this project). An inspiring playlist will run in the background with the option to skip or pause.

For engaging visitors to the website:
A twitter will be created. A forum will allow for discussion – which may be conducive. those who volunteer to have their story video documented will be available in the Media page for viewers to see. Every story will have a location (google maps) pinned to it along with their university. Polls will cycle through on the homepage that ask questions about preferred majors, your preferred adventure after college, etc. The Anonymous page will allow visitors to write and post their own stories anonymously (monitored by website admins).

Featured page will show stories written by the team about select individuals.

This will be a website to inspire and encourage as well as to bring students together as they share their stories.

Human experiments via Internet data

My final project will be on the internet as a massive human experiment. A while back I heard broadcast on NPR from On Point with the Co-Founder of OK Cupid and how he admitted to the public that the website using the data as a large scale human experiment. He took on a lot of backlash but at least he was honest- unlike Facebook initially. I’ll be able to interact with the audience of my website by creating polls and surveys, create videos of TXST student opinions and have interactive data graphs on the website. My five pages will include a home page, an about/mission page, a polls page, an opinion page, and a page detailing some of the findings companies have discovered through using their website’s data.bianary

Football in America

My final project will be on football and the impact it has people in america(specifically Texas.) Not only in regards to viewing and playing but the damage it can do to a persons long term health.  I would use multiple pages to discuss topics such as the positive stories from playing, negative stories, the business side of the game and also attempt to cover up to date NFL and college football news. I’d also like to add a page with user submitted stories on how football has effected them, whether it be positive or negative. To allow my audience to be involved in the site, I will incorporate a comment board as well as implementing polls on football related questions. Ill also have real videos from people who play football, have played, and allow their children to play. My main goal with this page is to show both sides of the game and show people different perspectives while being respectful of other people’s point of views.

Texas State Feminism

According to a recent Time Magazine online poll over which word should be “banned” from use in 2015, the word “feminist” stole the vote at 50%. While I grew up in  a household where feminism was encouraged, it seems the rest of the nation thinks the word is overly used, crass, and depicts a caricature of a species that, I feel, doesn’t represent the real majority. I even have female friends that would not identify as one in fear of being labeled as a “man-hater,” “bitch” or god forbid a lesbian. Basically it would be a “State of Feminism at Texas State.”

I want to see what Texas State students feel about the word and whether it should be rectified.  What I plan for my website to have is page dedicated to the history of the feminist movement and the word itself, a page on local enthusiasts like Feminists United on campus, a cons page as to why the word should be shunned, a contact page to learn more about movements, and maybe a state of feminism today involving political actions (like the Wendy Davis filibuster and the Hobby Lobby contraceptive act). I might include more pages if I can think of them.

I can talk to local students whether by on the street interviews and professors, groups like LGBT along with (if I can get hold of them) local politicians and their opinions.

Picture Perfect

My website will focus on young women who have developed eating disorders in order to obtain the perfect image that the media so often portrays. It will explore why as a society we constantly pit ourselves against each other, why we are so willing to put down others in order to feel better about ourselves, and why we have such a warped image of what beauty is.

-I don’t want to be ugly anymore.
The first page will be a narrative that explains the thought process behind so many who have developed eating disorders. Whether it be looking for a sense of control, wanting to always lose “just five more pounds,” or never feeling quite good enough for those we have surrounded ourselves with.

-Facts and Figures.
This page will dive deeper into why as a society we act the way we do using evidence of stats and this particular Youtube video.

-My body. My rules.
Ways to overcome self-esteem issues and how to fight the urge to purge.

-Share your story.
A page for visitors to connect with others who are going through the same issues. You are able to read others’ stories as well as submit your own.

-Find help here.
A contact page of places to find immediate help.

StreetStyleCulture

My final project will be over the newly mainstreamed culture of StreetStyle. It will revolve around finding the StreetStyle in the are (Austin / San Marcos ) and explaining to the common user the history behind this #movement. I will also talk to fashion majors and professors to get different angles on this topic.

My pages will include:

1) HOME [info about the webpage, the purpose of the webpage and info about why I chose this topic]

2) MODE [blog-style posts  with a breakdown of the clothing, idea behind it and links to social media]

3) MODE TIPS [a breakdown of weekly, or daily posts[articles] on why trends are a yes or a no, and where they came from]

4)BUY IT [this page will include links on images to different sites where similar items [from the posts] can be found and bought]

5) US [contact page & information about me and why This is relevant] I will use videos to add a background to the personal posts, maybe a close up to the look, accessories, shoes, etc. I will also use images as maps for the BUY IT page. There will be music playing in the background[this to put the user in the mood].  MAYBE ill include the option to have a narrated version of the article, so users can look at the images while listening to the description and story behind them instead of reading. I would like to create en environment similar to the one the website LOOKBOOK created.

I will include a comment section after each post, article or entry. As long as a weekly poll on certain trends, ideas or local features on people, places with cool style to be featured on the website. Also i would like to incorporate a forum where users can engage with me or other users to share ideas, style tips or another discussion revolving around street style.

Faith2Fit

Over one year ago, a Texas State student named Faith Pendleton flew back to America on a plane from Africa. The trip had changed her life. How that trip is still changing her life is still in the works. Since returning from Africa Faith has lost over 100 pounds and has dedicated her life to a healthy lifestyle. Not so that she can gain anybody’s approval, she does it because she believes in self-respect. She wanted to turn her life around so she took matters into her own hands. Now she is doing all kinds of things in the local fitness world. She writes a very popular blog called FitFaith and is planning a 5k with Texas Health and Racquet Club to help other people achieve life goals as well. Faith’s courage goes far beyond the initial decision to lose weight. She chose to believe in herself, in hopes it would help others believe in themselves too.
