The Hook-Up Culture

hook up cultureAn idea that I may want to explore is the “hookup culture.” With apps such as tinder, I feel as though today’s youth have been more promiscuous than those of previous generations. I think this is an interesting topic that has many different angles to it, and can easily be covered with different sources. Besides the home and contact pages (two of the five required pages), one page can strictly be used to tell the story of students that are willing to be interviewed over this topic. I feel as though I’ll be able to get stories from students/young adults that have “hooked up” or have opinions on hooking up and apps such as tinder that allow this to happen easily. Another page can have information provided by physicians/healthcare providers discussing the risks from a medical standpoint. The last page can easily be a page discussing STDs and tips on how to avoid them (contraceptives… abstinence).

Besides interviews that are turned into narratives, I can incorporate an interview that is filmed, the STD page can be an interactive map that the viewer can click through to find more information (kind of like this but not as childish), and I can incorporate surveys to see what percentage of my viewers do hookup. There is also a possibility of having a page with a discussion forum so visitors can maybe share their experiences (in a non-explicit way) or share their opinions on the matter.

Just an idea.

PhotogenNick

For this website, I would like to create an online portfolio of some sorts to market my new obsession with Photography/Media projects. The idea is that I’ll be able to showcase my work, and also discuss various concepts I’ve learned and various tips to help others. This semester I’m taking a photojournalism class and I’ve loved the process of going out and exploring while capturing those moments, but I haven’t really enjoyed the journalistic aspect of that class. This website will serve as a site strictly for photography. Art.

Besides my home page, I will have a page strictly showcasing my work and projects (one), an about me page that will go into further detail about what I want to accomplish and be all about me (two), a contact me page will give viewers access to me for possible bookings/shout-outs if I ever get that big (three) and I would also like to include a page that will almost serve as a blog within the website (four). That page will have tips from me, and discuss ideas that have been discussed to me. There may also be news that I’ll post there that is relatable to the photography world.

Since the site is going to have pictures, I really want to keep the color scheme very neutral. Also, I’m very fond of blacks, whites and greys, so that gives me even more of an incentive to use that scheme. I stumbled upon Tom Hull’s website, and I really like the layout and patterns. However, on my photo’s page, I want to keep the text very minimal. I would like viewers to be able to click on my pictures and be taken to a new page that has more information, or at least have the text pop up if the mouse is on top of the image. I’m not sure… that’s still up in the air. I do want the home page to have one image and my new logo.

I just want the website to speak for itself.

Buzzfeed

buzzfeed

When I’m bored at work or simply have too much time on my hands, I find myself frequenting Buzzfeed. Buzzfeed, if you’re unaware what the site has to offer, is a site that centers on news and content that is buzzing on the web. The content ranges from actual important stories to trivial celebrity news and quizzes, and they have everything in between.

Buzzfeed homepage

What I like most about the website is that there are graphics. Each story has a picture associated with it and the title stands out against the white background. There is an infinite scroll so it’s really easy to stay on the site and take in all of the news. The top toolbar has links to pages with specific information. For example, you can easily access articles that contain important news or you access quizzes. They also have the eight quick links to articles with specific tags such as “trashy,” “LOL” and “trending.

My only issue with the site is that the endless stream of content can be too much at times. You can easily get lost within the endless equally sized stories. As you scroll, the constant rows of pictures and titles can blend together and be rough on your eyes. However, this consistency in displaying their content makes the site easy to use. Everything is where it should be and you easily get the hang of it.

All in all, if you like buzz-worthy content you’ll be able to handle the design. That’s why I keep coming back. Content is king.
